Your Wedding Style/Theme

Hello beautiful brides!

So you're recently engaged, and you have your date, and now you're thinking about wedding colours and decor. Choosing a wedding theme or style can help simplify the process of selection as well as determine some details for you rather quickly. I'm the kind of person who, if I don't have anything particular in mind, will have the worst time choosing something, but when I do, I am very, very specific. Both of these situations can cause stress, but there are ways with dealing with both!

Let us begin with style, shall we?

How to choose a Style

This is actually a bit easier than it sounds. By style, I don't mean how the wedding will look per say, but the overall feel of the wedding. This is the starting point that will really narrow down some of your options in the next them, which is choosing a particular theme. Alright, here we go.

Level of formality

Know yourself, and know your fiance. This is one you will want to discuss together, because it is a big chunk of the puzzle here. How formal or relaxed do you want your wedding to be? Do keep in mind the following:

{Time of year/ Season} - a relaxed summer patio wedding simply won't work when temperature drop, and you may have no option but to book an indoor wedding, however, if you're lucky, chances are there are a range of indoor venues in your city from grande ballrooms to quaint barns. If you're having a destination wedding, consider the weather there.

{Venue Reception} - if you have chosen one already, if not, choosing your level of formality will help narrow down what you will be looking for in a venue, or vice versa. If you are getting married in Mexico and having a beach wedding, it will be less formal than a hotel ballroom.

{Budget} - while it is quite possible to pull of nearly any style and theme of a wedding with any kind of budget, don't get carried away only to become disillusioned later, budget it can be a major player when it comes to flowers and decor, so do keep that in mind.

How to choose a Theme

A theme can help the overall wedding match in colours and materials, it is also a wonderful way to express who you are as a bride and couple. When you are determining your theme, do consider the following:

#1 Season:

Certain seasons will lend themselves to particular themes much more easily than others. Also, season will narrow down a bit your color selection.

Winter
{Summer} - this is probably the most flexible season for themes and colours, as well as the widest selection. Bright, brilliant and bold colours are perfect for this season, but creams and softer colours work just as well.

{Winter} - probably my favourite season for a wedding! Winter is wonderful if you have snow where you live, the crisp white snow will make any of your wedding colours pop! This season is relatively flexible, from a Silver Winter Wonderland, to Christmas in the Country, to deep reds and purples. Simply romantic!

{Spring} - this is the season for my wedding! A wonderful season if flowers play a major role in your decor. Blushes and pastels are ideal for this season. Although this season is just as flexible as Winter in it's range of choices. Bright colours work perfectly as well, such as yellows and mint greens.

{Autumn} - This season is probably known for its most typical colour schemes that play off of the colours of Fall. You will see many with reds, yellows, oranges and browns. Although greys and bronze are ideal as well. Depending on how late in the Fall your wedding takes place, even Sunflower yellow and warm blues go very lovely together.

While there is no rule that says you cannot have a colour scheme that is not typical of the season -after all, it's your wedding! - it is something to consider for the overall beauty and experience of your wedding.

PS: Season can also be a big factor is determining your flower choices for the budget-minded bride. Make sure you talk to a florist and find out what flowers are in season during the month you are getting married. I personally recommend Fancy Fleurs, if you're getting married in Winnipeg area!

#2 Your Personality

Think of your likes, and your faves. Are you really artsy? Do you have a fondness for the vintage? Are you a country girl or ballroom diva? Is Disney a common love both you and your fiance share? Chances are, there will be people at your wedding that either don't know you as well, or you have lost touch with for some time. Showcasing your tastes and quirks through your wedding decor and theme can help make up for that. Not only that, but then it's YOUR wedding, and not just some cookie-cut wedding.

#3 Venue

This is a bit of no brainer, but the nature of your venue will be something to consider. If your venue has dark green carpet, or maple wood ceiling, make sure your colour scheme and over all theme can compliment it, rather than try to compete with the surroundings.

How Not to get Carried Away

The last thing you want, is to feel burdened or realize how much work you just created for yourself to maintain a certain theme you have chosen. Here are some tips on how to avoid that, because you won't know if you're headed down the road until you're halfway there.

#1 - Simplify

You don't need to have something quite so specific as a Great Gatsby or Nautical Marine theme. Something as simple Lace & Pears, or a picture of a sunflower field on a clear day can serve as enough inspiration to get you through the color choices and details of the decor. If you find inspiration from the Great Gatsby, great! Just be realistic and don't fantasize about the same Hollywood-level of glamour, look for main elements to help pull off that Roaring 20's feel that you desire. Two main colours, and two kinds of details, and you're 70% there! If you don't care for over-the-top attention to detail, don't bother! If you want to plan down to the last button, pace yourself and never forget to ask for help, as this can get overwhelming...

#2 - Meet with Vendors

Sometimes your choices come down to what your vendor has available. You may want a particular shade of rosey peach, but most vendors might not have table linen in that colour. So you must balance both having a general idea of what you want, and being flexible.

And with that, I just want to conclude with this: Pinterest can be your best friend! I don't think I could promote this website enough, I should be a spokesperson, I love it so much!

Happy planning, beautiful brides!
